2nd degree murder charge laid in death on Onigaming
A 23-year-old from the Onigaming First nation has been charged with second degree murder.
He’s been arrested in the death of 27-year-old Elijah Indian, also from Onigaming.
On Tuesday, the Treaty Three Police with the assistance of the Kenora OPP, responded to a call for service from the First Nation.
A person was located in medical distress and subsequently pronounced deceased.
A post-mortem will be conducted at the Ontario Forensic Pathology center in Toronto.
The investigation is being conducted by the OPP Northwest Region Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with assistance from the Treaty Three Police Service, OPP Forensic Identification Services, OPP Northwest Region Regional Support Team and Forensic Interviewing Team, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
There is no threat to public safety, but residents of the First Nation can expect to see an increase police presence as the investigation continues.
The accused will appear in Kenora Court on Thursday to face the charge.
