$11,000 in fines issued for shooting at moose decoy near Upsala
Shooting at a moose decoy from a boat has cost two hunters from southern Ontario $11,000.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says the incident took place on Lac Des Mille Lacs in October 2024.
The Ministry had set up the decoy to address concerns about illegal hunting practices in the area.
Court was told that Ministry Conservation Officers spotted one person positioning a boat in proximity to the moose decoys.
Another person fired a shot at the decoys as the boat moved away.
Both individuals fled the area but were subsequently arrested by the officers.
Robert Kerr of Meaford was fined $5,500 after pleading guilty to using a boat to kill, injure or harass wildlife.
Bryan Loker of Kitchener was issued a fine in the same amount after pleading guilty to having a loaded firearm in a motorboat and discharging it.
Their cases were heard separately in Thunder Bay.
