More beds coming to Thunder Bay shelters
The District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB) is funding 45 new overflow beds to boost the city’s shelter capacity.
The Salvation Army’s Cumberland Street location will add 20 overflow beds, and the Urban Abbey’s Simpson Street location will add 25 overflow beds.
TBDSSAB credits the need for more overflow capacity with rising rates of shelter use in the city.
The new beds are only precautionary, however, as the city’s shelter system has not yet exceeded its capacity.
TBDSSAB makes clear that it has not been forced to turn any individuals away due to a lack of space.
With the new overflow beds, the city now has 236 shelter beds on offer.
