More delays to open up the Portage Bay Bridge
It’s going to take a little longer than expected to open up the Portage Bay Bridge.
The City of Kenora had initially hoped to have it open by the end of last year…and then by the end of January.
Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says now it looks like another month of delays.
“Based on our meetings, it does look like we can expect repairs to resume later in January,” Breen told city council recently.
“We can expect similar repair times. In the order of six weeks or so. That may put us into early March.”
Breen says he’s not really surprised by the delay.
“It’s unfortunate that there is another month tacked on the schedule, but I think, at least in my experience, this is definitely the way construction goes.”
Breen says corrosion of some of the steel beams was worse than first thought, and they had to change the size of steel beams being used, so they re-do the repair plan for the bridge.
