What Kids Need Moncton expands as demand grows
It all started in 2011, in the basement of Amanda Pooley’s home, providing toys to kids at Christmas.
What Kids Need Moncton has grown into an organization that helps moms, dads and kids.
“The first Christmas, I think I helped 27 kids, and now we’re at almost 2000. That’s quite an uptick,” Founder Amanda Pooley stated.
Their biggest program is the Snowflake Station.
“Last year, we got presents to 1924 children. We also do baby baskets for the social workers at both local hospitals. So if a mom is assessed and in need, they’re able to give her a basket with all of the necessities. Everything to get started, even stuff for mom, like the breast pads and the hygiene pads. We also do clothing and footwear, toys and books and snowsuits all year round as well,” Pooley added.
Parents and children are always in need of toys, clothing and other items, but Pooley has found that many are looking for classes too.
“They want parenting classes. One of the classes I would like to offer is about new math. Parents are not able to help their kids with homework. So, a class to do an overview of the new math. This is what you need to know to be able to help your kids effectively,” Pooley stressed.
What Kind Needs Moncton has also just partnered with the Moncton Public Library to offer a first aid and CPR course for parents, grandparents, and anyone who has a child in their care.

Pooley also explained that the group needs a new space. They’re currently operating from the basement of her home, at the back of Jim’s Bike Shop, and in an unheated, unlit garage. With more people in need and donations coming in, there just isn’t enough room.
“We need space. It’s a lot of running and jumping through hoops just to make it happen, to get people the things that they need. If we actually had a space, we would be able to help infinitely more families. We’re looking for at least 1000 square feet. If someone wants to find out more or maybe they know of a space, the best way to reach us is through our Facebook page,” Pooley said.
