Process underway to replace retiring Supreme Court justice
The federal government has launched the process to appoint a new justice to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Mark Carney announced the start of the selection process as Justice Sheila Martin prepares to retire from the bench.
Applications from qualified candidates are being accepted until April 27.
By convention, the new justice must come from Western or Northern Canada, maintaining the court’s regional representation.
Once the application period closes, an independent advisory board will review candidates and provide a shortlist to the prime minister, who will make the final decision.
The board is tasked with identifying candidates who are functionally bilingual, highly qualified, and reflective of Canada’s diversity.
The appointment will fill one of nine seats on the country’s highest court.
