UPDATE: Shawn Crossman wins Moncton mayoral race
Shawn Crossman has been elected as the Mayor of Moncton.
“I am extremely honoured and privileged by what the citizens of Moncton have given me by being their next leader and their next mayor of this great city,” Crossman told our newsroom in an interview on Monday night.
Crossman will move into the Mayoral role following Deputy Mayor Paulette Theriault, who has been in an acting role since March 2025 after former Mayor Dawn Arnold was appointed to the Senate of Canada.
Crossman served in Ward 3 for three terms before deciding to run for Mayor in the May 11 municipal election.
He told our newsroom that it was always a goal to become the Mayor someday. “Yes, it was, but I’ve had challenges, both health-wise and challenges within City Hall that I’ve overcome, but I’ve always put my head down and worked hard for the citizens of Moncton and this is what I wanted. I wanted to prove that I can be their leader and have a solid council behind us.”
A few new faces are joining Moncton City Council, including Mike Gaudet, and Felix Leblanc in Ward 1, Marc Leger and Kristin Cavoukian in Ward 2, Juliana Mutch in Ward 3 and Kate Doyle in Ward 4.
“My first task as mayor is to bring the council together so that we can have a full conversation on public safety and what our shortfalls are, what our challenges are, and how we can improve those shortfalls and challenges, and all work together. For everyone who has been in this election, the number one concern has always been public safety. I want to make sure that we, as a council, address that and we start talking about it openly, with our public and with our citizens,” Crossman explained.
A swearing-in ceremony for the new council members will be held on June 1.
