Ignace receives $10 million from the NWMO
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is giving $10 million to the Township of Ignace.
It’s all part of the community’s Municipal Hosting Agreement with the NWMO.
Under the agreement, Ignace has discretionary use of the funding for things like housing, infrastructure and other investments.
The municipality requested the funds so that it could be invested, utilized for upcoming infrastructure and housing projects, and placed in reserves for future development initiatives.
Mayor Kim Baigrie says the funding is more than welcome.
“This significant payment of $10 Million to the Township of Ignace, the first of its kind in Canada, will assist the community with both its financial and future planning obligations through sound investments, but also with the potential to begin leveraging critical provincial and federal dollars for other important infrastructure improvements, housing projects and other Council priorities, such as capital cost purchases and reserve allocations,” stated Baigrie.
“These funds will also become critical for future Councils, as they assess and make improvements aligned to our strategic focus and vision.”
Both Ignace and the Wabigoon Lake Obijway Nation have voted to enter into an agreement with the NWMO as willing hosts for the proposed deep underground nuclear waste repository located between the two communities.
