Yarmouth-area man sentenced to nine years for sexual offences involving teenage girl
A Yarmouth-area man has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl during a 2010 trip to Halifax.
Bruce Douglas Hatfield, 60, was sentenced Tuesday in Nova Scotia Supreme Court after being found guilty following a trial on two counts of sexual interference.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the court also imposed a lifetime weapons prohibition, a lifetime sex offender registry order and a DNA order.
The victim in the case, Kayla Deveau-Adams of Yarmouth, also successfully applied to have a publication ban on her identity lifted.
The court heard the offences took place during a road trip from Yarmouth to Halifax.
The nine-year sentence was reduced by 423 days to account for time already spent in custody.
Following sentencing, Deveau-Adams said she chose to have the publication ban lifted in hopes of encouraging other survivors of sexual abuse to come forward.
