As another Northwestern Ontario winter fades into memory, we’re taking a moment to look back at the season that once again reminded us just how breathtaking this region can be. From deep freezes and fresh snowfall to golden hours that seemed to set the sky on fire, winter gave us no shortage of unforgettable moments, and you captured them beautifully.

Throughout the season, viewers from across NWO shared scenes that told winter’s story in quiet, powerful ways. Frozen lakes stretched out beneath pastel skies, framed by towering evergreens dusted in snow. Several submissions featured sunsets blazing through the trees, rich oranges and pinks melting into deep purples as daylight slipped away over snow-covered landscapes. Even in the coldest months, there was warmth in the light.

Some photos highlighted the stillness of winter mornings: the sun low on the horizon, casting long beams across icy paths and untouched snow, reminding us how peaceful the world can feel before the day fully wakes up. Others captured dramatic skies, soft cloud layers streaked with colour, glowing halos around the sun, and subtle rainbows hidden in winter light, proving that the sky itself was often the main event.

One striking submission showed a nighttime winter gathering illuminated by fireworks bursting into the sky, their reflections glowing against the snow below. In a season defined by darkness and cold, moments like these stood out, proof that winter is also a time for connection and celebration.

Now, as temperatures slowly rise and the days stretch longer, spring is beginning to take over. Snowbanks will shrink, trails will soften, and those same landscapes will soon look completely different. But thanks to you, the magic of this winter is preserved, one photo at a time.

As winter in NWO edges toward its slow, beautiful fade, we’re taking a moment to reflect on something special… the way you see this place we all love.

Over the past season, fans of yoursunsetcountry.ca , yourborderland.ca and yourkenora.ca have shared so many of stunning photos, sun dogs glowing fiery sunsets stretching across lakes, quiet forests heavy with snow, and the wildlife that watches us from the treeline. Each image is a reminder that even at the tail end of winter, NWO has a magic that never really goes away.

But what really makes this collection meaningful isn’t just the scenery, it’s the people behind the lens. And Connie, we see you… thanks for all the fantastic submissions.

It’s the way you bundle up, head out onto the ice, or pause on your morning or evening commute because the sky suddenly turned pink. It’s the way you notice the small things: the tracks on a frozen bay, the halo around the sun, the way the last light of day filters through snow‑covered pines. It’s the way you share those moments with all of us. Your photos let the whole region, and far beyond, see Northwestern Ontario through your eyes. They remind us why we love it here: not only for the landscape, but for the people who live close to it, look closely at it, and cherish it enough to capture it.

Show us your NWO: Winter Edition

There’s a certain magic to Northwestern Ontario that reveals itself the moment the snowpack settles deep into the forests and lakes. Early mornings hum with the sound of a snowmobile engine warming up, sending echoes through the frosted pines. Riders follow winding white trails that weave through endless evergreens, each turn offering a fresh breath of crisp, cold air.

By afternoon, the cold settles in with its familiar bite, the kind that stings your fingertips. Out on the open stretches, the landscape feels vast and untouched, frozen lakes shimmering faintly under the pale sky, and spruce trees dusted with fresh snow. It’s the kind of cold that demands respect but rewards adventure, turning a simple ride into a journey through an untouched northern world.

And when night comes, the real magic happens. The sky erupts in sweeping curtains of green and red, dancing across the darkness like something alive. The aurora borealis paints the horizon above quiet towns and frozen shorelines, reflecting softly off the ice below. Under those lights, with engines quiet and the world hushed, Northwest Ontario reveals its soul, wild, beautiful, and unforgettable.

Share Your Aurora Moments 🌌

Last night, the skies over Northwestern Ontario lit up in a spectacular display of the aurora borealis, and we’re thrilled to see your submissions rolling in! A huge thank you to Sarah Whorpole and Antrmo1972 for capturing and sharing their stunning shots of the northern lights. These glowing ribbons of green, purple, and pink shimmered across the sky, reminding us of nature’s quiet magic.

Auroras are caused by charged particles from the sun interacting with Earth’s magnetic field, and when conditions are just right clear skies, solar activity, and a bit of luck, we’re treated to a celestial show that feels almost otherworldly. Whether you’re a seasoned night-sky photographer or just happened to glance up at the right moment, we’d love to see your view. Shred Kelly Night at The Village

IT WAS A SOLD-OUT SHOW! — On August 16, 2025, Shred Kelly, Fernie, BC’s folk-rock dynamos, brought their electrifying “stoke folk” energy to The Brewers Village in Kenora, Ontario, Canada and absolutely set the outdoor venue ablaze! The night was a high-octane celebration of music and good vibes, with the band Tim Newton, Kenora’s very own — Sage McBride, Ty West and Ryan Mildenberger unleashing a torrent of foot-stomping anthems and heartfelt ballads that had the crowd jumping and dancing under the sunset. Joined by special guests Missy Jacobson and local talent Jackson Klippenstein, Shred Kelly turned the Brewers Village into a pulsating party hub, their infectious riffs and soaring vocals echoing through the Kenora night. Fans went wild for tracks like “For What It’s Worth”, “I Hate Work” and “Blissfully Unaware”. The band’s raw passion and mountain-born spirit transformed the evening into an unforgettable summer spectacle. With banjo-strumming, craft brews flowing and the crowd roaring, it was a night that proved why Shred Kelly is a must-see live act in Kenora!

Hailing from Fernie, British Columbia, Shred Kelly is a vibrant four-piece band that has been crafting their unique “stoke folk” sound since 2009. Based in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, they fuse elements of alternative, folk, and rock, delivering high-spirited performances and authentic, mountain-inspired storytelling. Comprising Tim Newton (vocals, banjo, guitar), Sage McBride (vocals, keyboard — originally from Minaki, Ontario), Ty West (guitar), Ryan Mildenberger (drums), and Jordan Vlasschaert (bass), the band has built a loyal following through their dynamic live shows and thoughtful songwriting.
