Health Unit receives confirmation from lab of influenza case
The flu season is upon us.
The Northwestern Health Unit says it has its first labratory confirmed case of influenza.
The Health Unit says that means that the flu is now likely a risk in all communities in northwestern Ontario.
Medical officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon suggests getting the flu vaccine and staying home if you are ill.
“The vaccine includes three strains, and different strains can circulate throughout the year,” explains Dr. Young Hoon.
“Even a vaccine that isn’t a perfect match to one strain can still provide some protection, especially against hospitalization and death. Our health care system is already stretched – anything that reduces the burden helps.”
The Health Unit offers these other suggestions:
- Avoid visiting patients/residents in hospitals and long-term care homes when ill
- Cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands often, and clean high-touch surfaces
- If you or someone you are with is at higher risk of severe infection, wear a well-fitting mask in indoor public settings.
