Ignace town council submits report to IAAC on the DGR
Ignace town council has drafted it’s own response to the Deep Underground Repository proposal put forward by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization.
The DGR will be located between Ignace and the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.
Councillor Jodie Defeo supports the report to the Impact Assessment Agency and likes that it addresses many concerns people have expressed.
“Every concern brought up in that information session, you touched on through that document, so, very, very proud of your teams’ efforts in creating a beautifully written document on behalf of the Township of Ignace,” Defeo told a special meeting of Ignace town council Tuesday.
Dave Hardy from Hardy Stevenson and Associates helped compile the report and says it addresses nuclear safety concerns among other issues.
“We stated clearly in the report that there should be no releases going off site, either radiological or contaminant releases, and that is a standard, that is a nuclear safety envelope on the (nuclear) plants, and it should be the standard here.”
The report was compiled by Hardy Stevenson and Associates and was endorsed by town council.
Comments to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada on the Deep Geological Repository have to be submitted by February 4th.
