Liberal MPP encourages call to Premier to protect loyalty rewards programs
A proposed bill to cut red tape will also eliminate points earned from Rewards programs.
Liberal MPP Stephen Blais says the bill’s approval will remove legislation that was put in place in 2018.
The former provincial Liberal government made it illegal for Rewards programs offered in Ontario to put an expiry date on points earned.
It was prompted by a policy change from Air Miles that drew an angry response from users and was later dropped.
Blais says no one is asking for the current legislation to be scrapped.
“Nobody campaigned on this. Nobody is asking for it. There were no town hall meetings. There is no mandate. There’s no public demand,” says Blais.
“This government found time to reopen a settled discussion, one that only benefits corporations, not families.”
Blais says the protection of Rewards program points matters a great deal to families who are trying to stretch every dollar.
“These programs aren’t a luxury. They’re part of how families afford groceries, buy Christmas gifts, pay for gas, buy flights, and everyday essentials,” says Blais.
Hearings on the larger bill take place this week.
Blais says there is no guarantee that any amendments will come from the committee level.
He is encouraging people to call the Premier’s office and demand that the section be removed.
“Call the Premier’s office at 416-325-1941. Like any good corporate service call centre, you might have to wait on hold to get some help. But politely let the Premier know what you think. Let the Premier know that your reward points are off limits.”
