Municipalities waiting on OPP costs for 2026
Communities across northwestern Ontario are putting their 2026 municipal budgets on hold because they still don’t have any policing costs.
That’s according to Mayor Andrew Poirier.
Poirier says he met with the provincial Solicitor General last week but there are still no numbers they can work with.
“They better get on it or do something because they are holding up municipality budgets everywhere across the province,” Poirier reported to Kenora city council recently.
“They are stalled on the operating side because it’s such a big piece. That’s our issue right now, because we don’t know what to put into that…what the number is supposed to be, which could be problematic for us going forward.”
Poirier adds that the municipality has put forth several ideas to reduce the number of calls for service by the local OPP and reduce their policing costs, but so far, the province has not responded to any of their ideas.
