Muskies advance to OFSAA playoff round
The Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team has earned a berth to the playoff round at the all-Ontario high school championship in Belleville.
The Muskies defeated E.S.C. L’Essor Aigles 3-1 in the final pool game Thursday morning.
The win, coupled with the Korah Kolts 4-2 loss to the Sydenham Golden Eagles, secured Fort Frances a second-place finish in their pool.
The Muskies will face the St. Teresa Titans from Belleville in a quarter-final game scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Central.
Ashton Armstrong opened the scoring against L’Essor, while the Muskies enjoyed a two-man power play advantage about 5 minutes into the first period.
The Aigles tied the game with 6 minutes remaining in the open frame.
The Muskies regained the lead near the end of the second period.
With Troy Veldhuisen sitting in the penalty box, Gage McKinnon capitalized on a pass from Robert Handberg.
Jayce Gavel gave the Muskies a 2-goal lead early in the third, which held until the final whistle.
