N.B. asks anglers to help get rid of invasive species
The provincial government will now require anglers with recreational fishing licences to hold on to certain fish species in certain areas.
The change goes into effect April 1.
A release from the Department of Natural Resources stated there are five species considered invasive, and the new rules aim to stop the spread of those species.
“This new initiative reflects our commitment to protecting New Brunswick’s native species and their habitats,” said Natural Resources Minister John Herron.
“Anglers must do their part to help safeguard our aquatic environments. Every effort makes a difference in preventing these invasive fish from taking over.”
The five species are:
- Black crappie
- Chain pickerel
- Largemouth bass
- Muskellunge
- Smallmouth bass
Anglers may be fined $100 to $500 if they release these fish.
