Needle Disposal Pilot Project Launches in Kenora
The City of Kenora and several local health partners are launching a new pilot project aimed at reducing discarded needles in public spaces.
Starting in 2026, residents and service providers will be able to report improperly disposed syringes using a web-based app called ReportNeedles.ca.
The tool allows users to enter the location of needles, upload photos, and works on any internet browser, including smartphones. Reports can also be made by calling or texting 807-464-1966.
The project is funded by the Northwestern Health Unit.
The goal is to make neighbourhoods safer by improving harm-reduction efforts and guiding decisions on where to place disposal containers.
“When innovation meets compassion, technology becomes a tool for healing. This web app is not just mapping what’s discarded, it’s mapping a path to change and create cleaner streets and safer spaces for everyone,” said Christina Derendorf, Manager of Kenora Makwa Patrol.
Donna Stanley, Director of Health Protection and Chief Nursing Officer at the Northwestern Health Unit, says the project will help improve efficiency:
“The project gives people the ability to communicate with us and will help increase the usage of resources more efficiently in dealing with what we know is a significant concern for the City.”
The pilot will focus on Kenora’s downtown area.
Data collected will be used to coordinate outreach and improve services.
An evaluation in fall 2026 will determine next steps and possible improvements.
