New blue box changes coming to Kenora
Some changes to the blue box program in Kenora in the new year.
New 95-gallon containers will be provided to homes in the city and replace blue boxes.
Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says they’ll have to outfit their garbage trucks with different equipment to handle the new bins.
“We will have to outfit our collection vehicles with a couple of cart tippers, pretty minor,” Breen explained to Kenora city council recently.
“Ultimately, the contact allows us to continue providing the service, preserve all of the positions related to doing that work as city staff.”
Breen adds that each home will be outfitted with the new carts at no cost.
“Similar to what you’d see in other municipalities in Ontario or other parts of the country. The big blue bins, with flip top lid with the wheels and handles that people can bring to the curbside.”
Breen says under the new agreement, GFL is handling all recyclables in the province and the City of Kenora is acting as a sub-contractor to pick up blue boxes.
Information about the new blue box program and any changes locally will be communicated in the next couple of days.
