New First Nation officially declared for McDowell Lake
Ontario’s newest First Nations is located 155 kilometers northeast of Red Lake.
McDowell Lake, or the Mishi Sakahikaniing Reserve was officially announced today in a special ceremony.
The reserve comes with over 45 hundred hectares of land.
Minister of Indigenous Affairs Greg Rickford says the land base is fundamental to building a strong, vibrant future for the community.
“The Province of Ontario is proud to support the creation of the Mishi Sakahikaniing Reserve and to work alongside McDowell Lake First Nation and the federal government to advance opportunities for prosperity and growth”, Rickford says in a statement.
McDowell Lake is part of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and located on Treaty #9 lands.
