Newton named member of Clean 50
A person who studies water quality issues on Lake of the Woods has been recognized nationally for her work.
Teika Newton is executive director of the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation.
She was selected this week as one of Canada’s Clean 50.
The Clean 50 recognizes people who play leadership roles in any of 16 different categories that cover virtually any and all types of activity in Canada that touches climate in some way.
She was presented the award this week in Toronto, and it was followed up with a meeting of other Clean 50 winners.
“It’s not just an awards ceremony, but it’s a full day’s summit where all the Clean 50 honourees gather together, to do networking,” explains Newton.
“We worked on problem solving and tackled some of the most pressing challenges facing the country and the world. We talked about things like how to address the climate crisis in this time of tariffs and really a push towards projects of national interest. How do we center those in a way that doesn’t negate work on climate action.”
Newton says the Lake of the Woods Water Sustainability Foundation has a staff of just two, and looks at water quality issues, such as algae blooms, on Lake of the Woods.
