No fishing licence required in Ontario this weekend
If ice fishing is on your schedule this Family Day weekend, there is no need to purchase a fishing licence or an Outdoors Card.
Ontario residents fish for free.
It is the first of four free fishing weekends scheduled to take place this year.
It is to encourage people to get outdoors and go fishing, maybe for the first time.
“Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario,” states Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources, in a release.
“Whether you’re a seasoned angler or it’s your first time ice fishing, take advantage of this opportunity to get out and make lasting memories with friends and family.”
Anglers must still adhere to all conservation fishing licence catch and possession limits, as well as all other applicable fishing regulations.
The Ministry also reminds people to keep safety the top priority when heading out on a frozen lake.
Check conditions with local ice hut operators or anglers, and let someone know where you are going.
Wear appropriate gear and clothing for the weather conditions and safety.
The free fishing weekend will begin Saturday and go through to Monday.
Other free fishing weekends will occur during Mother’s Day weekend (May 9 to 10), Father’s Day weekend (June 20 to 21) and Family Fishing week (June 27 to July 5).
Outside of free fishing periods, most people between the ages of 18 and 64 need an Outdoors Card and a licence to fish.
