Northwestern Ontario to get hit by blast of snow

A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of northwestern Ontario, with significant snowfall expected in Kenora, Dryden and surrounding areas beginning tonight and continuing into Thursday night.

Environment Canada says snowfall totals in the region could reach 20 to 35 centimetres, with locally higher amounts possible.

Snow is expected to begin this evening and intensify overnight.

Strong northerly winds are also forecast to develop later tonight or Thursday, with gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour.

Those winds could lead to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility, particularly in open areas and on highways.

Forecasters warn that travel conditions could deteriorate quickly, with near-zero visibility at times. Roads, sidewalks and parking lots may become difficult to navigate, and drivers are being urged to prepare for hazardous conditions and possible delays.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve from west to east late Thursday as the system moves out of the region.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and weather alerts as the storm approaches.

Snow is expected to begin late
