NWMO purchases property in Ignace for new building
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has announced a location for its Centre of Expertise.
The building will be located on 67-acres of land just west of the town hall on Highway 17.
Spokesperson for the NWMO Vince Ponka said in a recent interview this will be a 65,000 square foot building.
“Because it is such an architecturally beautiful building, we hope people will stop and just want to check out this interesting building, and that will be a hub for other economic development in the area.
Ponka adds they have taken some of the input from the community and used those ideas in the design of the building.
“Because, really we want Ignace to be excited and proud of this building as much as we are. So, we want to make sure they see themselves reflected and we’ve already incorporated a lot of previous ideas we’ve gotten in the last couple of years in these drawings.”
The facility will include workspace and technical areas for NWMO staff, multi-purpose gathering spaces, and an interactive visitors’ centre.
Construction of the building is expected to begin next year, with the official opening taking place in 2028.
