Petition for event center in Red Lake now circulating
Residents of Red Lake are hoping the fifth time is a charm.
A petition is being circulated to get federal and provincial funding for a new event center and arena.
Kevin Harland is on the REACH committee, which stands for the Regional Events Arts and Cultural Hub.
“We are basically ready to go however, we have been denied four times for funding to complete the project”, Harland explains.
“So, that’s the reason for this petition. To say, we’re saying we’re here, we’re not going anywhere.”
Harland adds that with an all-weather road coming north of Red Lake, and the construction of the Berens River Bridge, now is the time lobby again for the project.
“We’re taking advantage. One, because of the increased focus on the north for supporting First Nations communities, as well as the critical mineral development projects that are going on to the north of us.”
Initial design plans were completed in 2017 and includes in a 174-page report on the Event Center.
So far, there’s been no funding provided for the project.
