Premier bestowed with Climate Betrayal Award
A coalition of groups feels betrayed by Premier Doug Ford.
They have recognized him with a Climate Betrayal Award for eliminating the province’s emissions-reduction targets.
They are disappointed with the government’s passing of legislation that eliminates the province’s emissions-reduction targets.
The groups say the action endangers the health of residents and the livelihoods of future generations.
David Robertson, the co-chair of Seniors for Climate Action Now, says Ontario was within reach of its goals when Ford was elected.
“The province was actively helping to keep global temperatures in the safe zone, but through the Ford years, we have gone from climate leader to climate laggard,” says Robertson.
“And now, in a few lines of legislative text, we have become a climate outlier, joining the likes of Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Trump’s America.”
Lyn Adamson, co-chair of the Ontario Climate Emergency Campaign, bestowing the award on Ford is a symbolic way to show that they feel betrayed by his government and the lack of a climate action plan.
“We would prefer to be giving him a Climate Hero Award,” says Adamson.
“That would require a bold new climate action plan.”
A recent report from Ontario’s Auditor General indicated that the province would not meet emission-reduction targets set for 2030.
