Saint John police launch 4‑day seat belt campaign
Saint John police are launching a four‑day seat belt campaign and want to draw attention to the risks that come with not buckling up.
The campaign runs from Tuesday to Friday and includes both education and enforcement of provincial seat belt laws.
More than 40 per cent of people who die in collisions in the province are not wearing a seat belt, according to the Government of New Brunswick.
The province also stated that many of those deaths could have been prevented if seat belts had been used.
Officers are sharing reminders on how to wear a seat belt properly.
Police note that belts should not be twisted or damaged and that buckles and retractors should move smoothly.
The province advises positioning the lap belt low over the hips and the shoulder belt across the chest, and warns against placing the shoulder belt under the arm or behind the back.
Drivers are responsible for making sure passengers under 16 are secured in the correct child restraint for their age, weight and height.
Police encourage parents and caregivers to check car seats and booster seats regularly and replace them when needed.
Saint John police added that anyone who needs help installing a car seat can contact the service for assistance at 506-648-3333.
