Sioux Lookout musher named Rookie of the Year at Iditarod
A Sioux Lookout sled dog team has completed its run at the Iditarod.
Musher Jesse Terry and his 12-dog team crossed the finish line on Thursday at 3:36 a.m. in 14th place.
He was also the first newcomer to finish, earning him Rookie of the Year honours and a $2,000 cash prize.
His team of 12 dogs completed the 1,500-kilometre journey from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, in 10 days, 23 hours, 36 minutes and 3 seconds.
He finished more than 3 hours ahead of the next first-time competitor.
Terry is originally from Winnipeg, but now lives in Sioux Lookout with his family, where he cares for and trains a team of 30 sled dogs.
He cites one of his biggest influences as Iditarod veteran Hans Gatt, whom Terry now works alongside building dog sleds.
Jessie Holmes from Brushkana, Alaska, who was the reigning champion, finished first two days earlier.
