Snow blankets province on January 1st

It’s a winter wonderland in parts of New Brunswick.

The first winter blast came on the first day of 2026.

“The heaviest snow was in the eastern portion of the province. If you draw a line from Saint John due north, that’s the area that was most affected by snow. Anywhere west of that line, it was only really around five to eight centimetres, especially in Fredericton and St Stephen area,” Environment Canada Meteorologist Jill Maepea stated.

She provided some unofficial snow totals, including at the Saint John airport, where around 24 centimetres was measured, and at the Greater Moncton Romeo Leblanc International Airport, where 17 centimetres was calculated. Maepea added that it was difficult to measure accurately due to all of the drifting and blowing snow.

The highest unofficial total was in Rogersville, with 28 centimetres of snow.

She added they aren’t monitoring any other systems in the immediate future, but we can expect some unseasonably cold temperatures over the next couple of days.
