Students gain additional credits during summer learning
Several students in the Rainy River District spent their summer in a classroom.
The Rainy River District School Board run several programs aimed at students in all grades.
Superintendent of Education Beth Fairfield says one allowed grade 9 and 10 students to obtain credits they failed to achieve during the regular school year.
“We had 25 1/2 credits recovered in grades nine and 10. That’s a real success story because now we’re keeping those students closer to being on track as they move into their senior courses,” says Fairfield.
Another 34 students earned credits with their participation in a paid summer co-op program.
This allowed students to test out possible career paths and to develop job readiness skills such as workplace health and safety and workplace ethics.
“The summer co-op is an opportunity for them to get that component that’s a requirement for them to earn the red seal on their diploma in that pathway program,” says Fairfield.
“Some of the job placements were outfitters, skilled trades, motor sector and public works.”
The Boards also run an E-learning program for high school students and another that allowed Grade 8 students to earn a Grade 9 credit.
“The focus of that program was on outdoor education, spiritual learning, life skills and mental health. We often see that correlation for our students who are struggling, making the transition. They have some attendance challenges as well, and often it’s associated with anxiety, coming to school, coming to the larger high school.”
Other programs were offered to the young students.
The Primary Summer Learning Program at Robert Moore School was tailored for students in Grades 1 to 3.
School Readiness Programs were offered at four elementary schools to support children entering kindergarten, as well as those who recently completed junior and senior kindergarten.
Another 68 students took part in a program to assist with their re-entry to school.
The program was offered at Rainy River High, Riverview, Donald Young, Fort Frances High, JW Walker, Robert Moore, Mine Centre and Northern Lakes Schools.
