Thunder Bay activates emergency weather plan

As a wave of freezing cold air strikes the region, the City of Thunder Bay’s Severe Weather Response Plan has been put into effect.

The plan calls for extra levels of coordination between city departments and service partners to help the community stay safe as temperatures drop into extremes.

The city will be monitoring shelter capacity and running some of its services, such as the Street Outreach Services (SOS) Van, the NorWest Community Health Centre Care Bus, and warming centres on extended schedules.

The city reminds residents that the Salvation Army and Shelter House have 24-hour emergency centres, while Out of the Cold and the Urban Abbey also offer spaces.

The city will consider expanding overnight spaces if necessary.

Residents should dress in layers, cover up exposed skin, watch for frostbite symptoms, and limit the time they spend outdoors wherever they can.

Public buildings such as libraries and community centres can be used to warm up during their operating hours.

Those planning to drive should keep emergency kits, jumper cables, and extra blankets in their vehicles.

Anyone who witnesses another resident requiring assistance due to the cold should contact the SOS Van at 807-620-7678 during its operating hours of 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

More details on the weather response plan can be found on the city website.
