Muskies eliminated from Winnipeg High School Football League playoffs
The Fort Frances Muskies football season in the Winnipeg High School Football League has come to an end.
The Muskies fell 31-24 in a semifinal matchup on Thursday in Winnipeg,
The Muskies took the early lead when quarterback Milo Stafford connected with his brother Liam on a 60-yard touchdown pass.
The convert attempt was unsuccessful.
The Eagles took the ensuing kickoff and scored on a long touchdown run.
Dryden took the lead with a successful 2-point convert play.
The Eagles extended their lead in the opening quarter by scoring a touchdown on a fake field goal..
The teams exchanged field goals in the second quarter, giving Dryden an 18-9 lead at halftime.
The Eagles widened their lead, scoring touchdowns on their first two possessions of the second half.
The Muskies countered, with receiver Malachi Barkley running 64 yards untouched into the end zone.
Trent Friesen booted the convert to narrow the Eagles’ lead to 31-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
With under 4 minutes remaining in the game, Barkley scored his second touchdown of the game, running from 12 yards out, while the Stafford brothers connected on the 2-point convert to narrow the Eagles’ lead to 7.
The Muskies made one last offensive push late in the game, but time expired before they could reach the end zone.
The Muskies finished the season with an overall record of 8-2.
The Eagles advance to the WHSFL AAA Division championship game against the St. Norbert Celtics on Thursday, November 6th, at Princess Auto Stadium.
St. Norbert is coached by former Muskie star receiver Adrian Huntley.
The Celtics upset the top-seeded Churchill Bulldogs 17 -14 in the other semifinal game.
