Fort Frances celebrates Northern Ontario Heritage Fund money for rink project
Construction of a new roof over the McIrvine outdoor rink is expected to take place this year.
The town of Fort Frances has received a grant of $500,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund for the work.
Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickfrd was in Fort Frances to visit the rink and talk with town officials about the project.
He says covered outdoor rinks have become all the rage in northwestern Ontario, drawing attention to recently completed projects in nearby Alberton and Chapple Townships.
“They’re just covering them because they get year-round use from the facilities,” says Rickford.
“So hopefully we’re back to do that, but let’s just celebrate what we’ve accomplished here today. Way to go to Fort Frances.”
The project also includes a redo of the rink with a concrete slab, new rink boards and new lighting.
Mayor Andrew Hallikas says that will extend the facility’s use.
“Outdoor skating and hockey are a tradition in Fort Francis. Putting a roof on the McIrvine rink will allow it to be better utilized during the skating season and also used year-round for social and recreational pursuits,” says Hallikas.
“This will enhance the culture and recreational activities available to our residents.”
The town estimated the total cost to come at just over $1 million.
A contract was recently awarded to Northern Flow Installation & Consulting, a firm located in Oliver-Paipoonge.
