Ontario’s minimum wage to increase 1.9% in October
Ontario’s lowest-wage earners will earn a little more money in October.
The province’s minimum wage is going up that month.
It will be set at $17.95 per hour, a 35-cent increase.
Legislation ties increases to April’s inflation rate each year.
“Ontario workers are the engine of this province,” states David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, in a release.
“By raising the minimum wage to one of the highest in Canada, our government is putting more money in the pockets of Ontario workers, supporting families through economic uncertainty and giving businesses the stability and predictability they need to plan and grow.”
The province says roughly 700,000 employees who earn minimum wage will benefit.
Roughly 35% are employed in retail trade.
Another 24% work in the accommodation and food services sectors.
