Kenora police alert public after bogus bill surfaces

Provincial police in Kenora are warning the public after a counterfeit Canadian banknote was discovered in circulation.

The Ontario Provincial Police say officers were notified on February 6 after a fake $20 bill was used to pay for a taxi ride earlier in the week.

Investigators determined the passenger had passed what appeared to be “prop” money during a fare on February 2.

The taxi driver became suspicious at the time of the transaction and later brought the bill to the Kenora OPP detachment, where it was turned over for further examination.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The Bank of Canada offers online information on how to identify counterfeit currency and encourages people to routinely check the security features on banknotes to help prevent fake money from circulating.

Fatal collision west of Thunder Bay

A 23-year-old woman from Poplar Hill and a 28-year-old woman from Eabametoong First Nation have been pronounced dead following a collision on Highway 17 near Thunder Bay.

Members of the Thunder Bay detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say the crash occurred on Thursday evening at around 9 p.m. and involved a pickup truck and an SUV.

Two other people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The highway was closed between Sistonen Corners and Highway 130 for several hours overnight while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. 

All lanes are now open to traffic, and motorists can resume normal travel.

There’s no word yet of exactly what caused the crash.

The OPP are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event or who may have relevant dashcam footage to reach out at 1-888-310-1122.

Flight forced to return to Sioux Lookout after alleged assault

A woman is facing multiple charges after a disturbance aboard a flight from Sioux Lookout to Kasabonika Lake led the plane to return to Sioux Lookout Municipal Airport.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police, officers were called just after 7 p.m. on Friday after a reported assault on board the aircraft while it was in the air.

Police say a 44-year-old woman was arrested and charged with assault in an aircraft in flight, assault, and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

She was released on bail with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court in Wunnumin Lake on January 19.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information or video related to the incident is asked to contact the OPP or reach Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Driver charged after refusing breath test in Kenora crash

A driver is facing a refusal charge after a collision in Kenora early Tuesday morning, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

Officers were called to Homestake Road shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday after receiving a report that the driver involved in the crash might be impaired.

Police indicated that officers believed the individual had consumed alcohol and demanded a sample using an approved screening device.

The 21-year-old driver refused several times and was arrested at the scene, according to the OPP.

The OPP said the driver has been charged under the Criminal Code with failure or refusal to comply with a demand.

Police added that the person’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle has been impounded for seven days.

The driver was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on January 22.

The OPP remains focused on removing impaired drivers from the road and encourages anyone who suspects impaired driving to call 911.

Charges laid during traffic stop in Sioux Lookout

A 41-year-old from Kasabonika Lake First Nation is facing charges after a stop during a Festive RIDE program.

It reportedly happened on Wellington Street in Sioux Lookout at around 10:30 pm on Saturday.

OPP say the driver tried to evade police, and a traffic stop was initiated.

Officers determined the they were driving while impaired by alcohol.

The driver was arrested and taken to the OPP Detachment for further testing.

Their license was suspended for 90 days, and vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Opp say they were released from custody with a January court date.

Six arrested for Alberton break and enter

Officers with the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have concluded a month-long investigation into a break and enter that took place on November 11 in Alberton Township.

The investigation has led to the arrest of six men between the ages of 24 and 50.

The accused are facing a range of charges related to breaking and entering and possessing unauthorized firearms, with four of the six individuals also facing charges pertaining to weapons trafficking.

Three of the men remain in police custody, while three have been released.

All six accused individuals will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Fort Frances over the next month.

Kenora man charged after disposing of guns in recycling bin

Ontario Provincial Police in Kenora have laid a charge after firearms were found discarded in a public-access recycling bin.

Police say they were alerted on November 22 after receiving information about items resembling firearms being dropped off at a recycling bin accessible to the public. An investigation later confirmed that several BB guns, along with a firearm, had been disposed of at the location.

As a result, a 60-year-old Kenora man has been charged with careless handling of a firearm under the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora at a later date.

OPP say improper disposal of firearms poses a serious risk to public safety and are reminding residents that firearms must be handled and disposed of according to the law.

Anyone who finds a firearm is urged not to touch it and to contact police. OPP also note that members of the public can reach out to police for assistance with the proper and safe disposal of firearms.

One person is dead after a crash in Kenora overnight.

OPP say one vehicle collided on Redditt Road at around 11 p.m. Thursday. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

There’s no word yet on what caused the collision.

Kenora OPP Detachment, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene.

Reddit Road between Highway 17a and James Road was closed overnight while police investigated.

Man arrested after stealing truck, hitting police car: OPP

One man is in custody after speeding away from police in a stolen vehicle.

Greenstone OPP got a call Friday around 7:30 p.m. about a vehicle taken from a home in Long Lake 58 First Nation.

They spotted it on Highway 11 and tried to pull it over, but the vehicle sped off.

When officers tried to block it on the road, the driver hit one of the cruisers and kept going.

The stolen vehicle was spotted again near Geraldton and police used a spike belt to stop it.

The 20-year-old driver remains in custody and faces multiple charges.

He is set to appear in Thunder Bay court Monday.

Two charged after OPP seize suspected cocaine and meth

The Ontario Provincial Police discovered and seized a haul of suspected cocaine and methamphetamine valued at $600,000 during a traffic stop in Shuniah on Thursday.

5 Kilos of suspected cocaine and 0.8 kilos of suspected methamphetamine were seized.

A 59-year-old man from Etobicoke and a 59-year-old woman from Cookstown have both been charged with possessing and trafficking in Schedule 1 substances.

The two accused both appeared for bail hearings before being remanded into custody.
