Temporary street closure in I. Falls requested for parking

Organizers of the International Falls Bass Championship are looking for some additional parking.

They are asking the city for permission to close a section of Second Street near Smoky Bear Park during this August’s tournament for anglers’ vehicles during the weigh-ins.

Spokesperson Nancy Peterson says they lost parking at the nearby Backus building when it became apartments.

“There’s nowhere to put these anglers’ vehicles and things when they come through,” says Peterson.

“We need somewhere to park them when they’re done weighing in.”

Peterson does not feel the temporary closure will impact access to other nearby areas.

“It would not interfere with the alley behind Orton’s gas station. It would be from that point around the corner, just to 8th Avenue,” says Peterson.

“It also would not affect Boise employees being able to get in and out of that parking lot there.”

City Council is to consider the request at a future meeting.

The annual fishing tournament takes place from August 27-29, though setup takes a few days prior.

Saint John raises certain parking fines

The City of Saint John is increasing fines related to the city’s traffic bylaw.

The changes were approved at Monday’s meeting of Common Council and came into effect Wednesday.

In a press release, the City said the changes were made to support “safer winter storms and smoother year-round street maintenance.”

The increases apply to certain parking violations the City said interfere with Public Works operations.

“Illegally parked vehicles make it difficult for Public Works crews to plow, remove snow, and maintain streets, impacting safety and slowing service for everyone,” the release said. “Increasing penalties encourages better compliance so crews can do their work efficiently.”

The bylaw violations affected by the increases include:

  • Section 5(3)(c) Bus Zone
  • Section 5(3)(d) Loading Zone
  • 5(3)(e) No Parking
  • 5(6) No Parking – Snow Ban, 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
  • 5(7) No Parking in Winter – 12:01 to 7 a.m.
  • 16(2) Alternate Side Parking – 1st to 15th day of month
  • 16(3) Alternate Side Parking – 16th to last day of month
  • 16(4) No Parking, 12:01 to 7 a.m.
  • 16(5) Alternate Side Parking, Dec. 1 to March 31, Schedule H2
  • 16(6) Alternate Side Parking, Dec. 1 to March 31, Schedule H2
  • 16(9) Alternate Side Parking, Dec. 1 to March 31, Schedule G2
  • 16(10) Alternate Side Parking, Dec. 1 to March 31, Schedule G2

Penalties increase the longer a ticket goes unpaid.

The changes will apply year-round to support all seasonal maintenance, including spring and summer street sweeping.

Winter parking restrictions to take effect Wednesday

With the first major snowfall of the year rapidly approaching, Thunder Bay will be implementing its winter parking restrictions at 9 a.m. on Wednesday to aid its snowplows.

Where displayed, calendar parking restrictions will prevent the use of parking spaces from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Calendar parking signs are specific to odd or even calendar days, so the spaces remain free to use on off-days. This allows snowplows to clear at least half of the road on any given day.

Where marked, priority routes prevent any parking on either side of the street from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. every day.

Winter parking restrictions will remain in place until March 31.

Environment Canada is currently projecting 10-20cm of snow in Thunder Bay from Tuesday night to Wednesday night.

The city of Thunder Bay is asking drivers to keep their distance from snowplows so they can maneuver more easily.

Fort Frances continues to look at additional parking for Sister Kennedy Centre

Fort Frances town council is willing to review another option that provides the Sister Kennedy Centre with more parking.

Council rejected two proposals from Administration this week that would have resulted in the addition of between 2 and 4 spaces, costing between $175,000 and $400,000.

Both proposals called for the additional space located in the green space to the south side of the Fort Frances seniors’ centre.

Councillor John McTaggart proposed a third option.

“And that would be an entrance off of Victoria to the south of the senior center building, with diagonal parking along the bush line that is on the south side of the property and exiting through the parking lot, the current parking lot,” says McTaggart.

“I’m suggesting that with the moving of a couple of buildings, we could probably pick up seven or eight or nine parking spots.”

Council previously rejected proposals to change calendar parking restrictions around the centre.

A sidewalk on Nelson Street from a nearby municipal lot was also considered, but dismissed when bids for the project came in over budget.

Councillor Mike Behun says the sidewalk is still the most cost-effective approach.

“I appreciate that in the wintertime and having to cross Victoria, but when you look at these prices, I think that looking at the sidewalk again is the most cost-effective option to accomplish what we want to accomplish,” says Behan.

Administration is expected to come back next month with an updated report.

Calendar parking restrictions to be partially lifted in International Falls

Calendar parking in International Falls is being partially lifted as a trial.

No tickets will be issued on Sundays between 9 a.m. and noon for the next 90 days.

The move stems from a request from Zion Lutheran Church for parking during church services.

Church member Len Peterson says he understands the need for calendar parking, but the safety of parishioners also has to be taken into account.

“If you’re going to talk safety, you think about the people going to church that are very elderly, who have to walk a considerable distance on ice and snow because they can’t park right in front of the church. That really makes no sense to me,” says Peterson.

City council agreed to lift the restrictions on a trial basis.

Mayor Drake Dill says he is hesitant to have anything more permanent.

“Because that opens a whole other set of circumstances,” says Dill.

“But I think that whether it’s church activities or other things that people do and enjoy in our community that we don’t want to hesitate them from doing so, but how can we be consistent?”

The lifting of calendar parking on Sunday mornings will be citywide.

International Falls Police intend to monitor and report back to council at the end of the trial.
