Special Investigations Unit probing Kenora incident

Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit is looking into an incident in Kenora.

Provincial Police say an individual had to be taken to hospital after being arrested.

OPP provide very few details but say the person was arrested early Saturday morning after being involved in a dispute.

While in custody, the person required medical attention and was transported by ambulance to hospital.

The nature of the medical issue or the person’s condition is not immediately known.

Ten dead in mass shooting at northern B.C. school

Ten people are dead following a mass shooting in the small northern British Columbia community of Tumbler Ridge, an incident that has shocked residents and drawn national attention.

RCMP say officers responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time Tuesday.

During a search of the building, police located multiple victims as well as a person believed to be responsible, who was found dead from what investigators describe as a self-inflicted injury.

Most of the victims were discovered inside the school. One person later died while being transported to hospital, and two others were airlifted with serious injuries. Police say roughly two dozen additional people were treated at a local clinic for injuries considered non-life-threatening.

Investigators later found two more deceased individuals at a nearby home believed to be connected to the incident. Searches of surrounding properties are continuing as officers work to determine whether anyone else was harmed.

An emergency alert urging residents to shelter in place was lifted Tuesday evening, and RCMP say there is no indication of additional suspects or an ongoing threat to the public.

Tumbler Ridge, located in northeastern B.C.’s Peace River region, has a population of about 2,400 people, and the local secondary school serves roughly 160 students.

Schools in the community are expected to remain closed for the rest of the week while supports are put in place.

Police say a motive has not been determined, and investigators have not released the identity of the suspected shooter or details about the weapon involved.

Carney reacts

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is devastated by the deadly shooting in Tumbler Ridge, offering condolences to the families and friends of those killed and thanking first responders for their courage.

In a statement, Carney said Canadians are grieving alongside the community and emphasized the country’s empathy and unity in times of crisis.

Carney also confirmed he has spoken with B.C. Premier David Eby and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree as federal and provincial officials coordinate support for the community. A planned visit to Halifax and an upcoming trade mission to Europe have been cancelled in light of the tragedy.

False name/stolen credit cards land Manitoba man in Kenora jail

A traffic stop near Kenora resulted in the arrest of a man wanted by authorities elsewhere in Canada.

Provincial Police say they pulled over a vehicle after officers observed a traffic infraction.

When officers spoke with the driver, he was unable to provide a driver’s license and then gave a false name and date of birth.

He was arrested on a charge of obstruction.

A subsequent search turned up several credit cards that had been reported lost or stolen.

Two different driver’s licenses with the driver’s photo and different names were also discovered.

A further investigation revealed the 19-year-old man from Manitoba had outstanding warrants for property crimes in Barrie and Alberta, and an immigration warrant by Canada Border Services.

He was being held in custody pending a court appearance.

Police integrity under review in Ontario

A review is underway that looks at the integrity of Ontario’s police services.

The move by the province’s Inspector General of Police comes after the arrest of 9 Toronto police officers caught up in an organized crime investigation.

Recruitment, supervision, access to police databases and evidence management practices will be subject to the review.

“Effective policing depends on public confidence,” states Inspector General Ryan Teschner in a release.

“Ontarians must have assurance that our policing system is able to maintain the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.”

Teschner says it is essential that there be strong systems of vetting, oversight, accountability and standards for police officers to earn and preserve public trust.

“Protecting the public is at the core of policing. The results of this inspection will help the sector deliver safe, effective and trustworthy policing for the people of Ontario.”

Police services boards and the Ontario Provincial Police will also be subject to the review.

The initial request came from the Toronto Police Service and the Toronto Police Service Board, with Teschner opting for a sector-wide inspection.

It will focus on five key areas;

  • Supervision and span of control, including how officers are supervised and how effective that supervision is;
  • Screening and vetting of police officers, both at recruitment and on an ongoing basis;
  • Access to police databases and information systems, including permissions, controls and clearances;
  • Evidence and property management practices; and
  • Substance abuse and fitness for duty.

Drugs, cash seized during Que. and N.B. police raids

A large seizure of drugs and other items in a police probe investigating a group with links to the Hells Angels.

The National Organized Crime Enforcement Squad (ENRCO) and the North Shore Integrated Regional Squad (ERM), in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and various municipal police forces, conducted raids in Quebec and New Brunswick.

In a news release, Sûreté du Québec searches were conducted in communities including Montreal and Laval, Quebec, and Riviere-Verte and St. Basile, New Brunswick.

Seventeen homes and 17 vehicles were searched last week and again on February 4.

Items seized include:

• 15 kilograms of cocaine;
• Over $564,000 in cash;
• Over 50 cell phones;
• Nomads NB HA prospect jacket;
• Street Soldiers North Shore member jacket;
• TR HA prospect jacket;
• Red Devils Maritimes member jacket;
• 7 long guns;
• 2 handguns;
• 2 body armor vests;
• 3 tasers;
• 500 THC vapes;
• Silver bars worth approximately $5,000

This is part of an investigation launched by police around two years ago.

No charges: Special Investigations Unit closes file on Rainy River District OPP officers

No charges will be laid following a review by the Special Investigations Unit of an incident that occurred last October in Pinewood.

Provincial Police were pursuing a truck reported stolen in the west end of the Rainy River District.

OPP first spotted the vehicle on Highway 621.

A spike belt was later deployed, causing the truck to drive over it.

The vehicle continued for a short distance before entering a ditch as it attempted to make a turn from Highway 11 onto Donald Street in Pinewood.

The driver of the truck was not hurt and was arrested.

A passenger, a 19-year-old woman, was also placed under arrest, but suffered a fractured knee.

In its review, the SIU says it found no evidence that the officers involved had committed any criminal wrongdoing that led to the women’s injuries.

Its report states that police travelled at reasonable speeds in their attempts to stop the vehicle, with neither vehicle going any faster than 70 kilometres an hour.

The SIU also noted that police rendered care to the vehicle’s two occupants after the collision and stayed with the injured woman until paramedics arrived on scene.

Thunder Bay man in custody after 11-hour police standoff

A Thunder Bay man is facing charges after an 11-hour standoff with police early Sunday morning.

Police were called around 2:45 a.m. after an individual known to the family had locked himself in a home on the north end and prevented residents from entering.

The Emergency Task Unit become involved when he threatened officers who tried to enter the home.

After determining there were no other occupants in the home, officers entered the residence and arrested the suspect without incident.

The man faces the following charges:

• Unlawfully in dwelling house
• Uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm
• Failure to comply with release order
• Failure to comply with probation order (two counts)

He remains in custody with a future court date.

Wabigoon man charged with impaired driving for second time in a month

An incident at the Laura Howe Marsh in Dryden has led to impaired driving charges against a man from Wabigoon Lake First Nation.

Provincial Police say a vehicle rapidly accelerated in the parking lot, causing it to launch over a snowbank into a ditch.

The 33-year-old driver later fled on foot but was apprehended a short time later.

He has been charged with dangerous driving and impaired driving.

Police say the same person was charged earlier last month after live-streaming while consuming illicit substances and operating a motor vehicle.

He is to appear in court at a future date.

Thunder Bay Police investigating incident in Current River area

No details yet surrounding an incident in the Current River area on Sunday.

Thunder Bay City Police cordoned off an area around Leslie and Grenville Avenue in the morning.

They were also telling people to avoid the area around the Strathcona Golf Course.

Police are only saying that there was no immediate risk to the public.

There area was reopened to traffic and pedestrians by the afternoon.

We will have more details as they become available.

Crime numbers fall in west half of Rainy River District

Provincial Police report a drop in crime in the western portion of the Rainy River District.

This includes communities between the Fort Frances area to Rainy River.

Violent crime, which includes assaults, sexual assaults and firearms offences, dropped 20% last year over 2024.

Property crime, which includes theft, mischief and break-ins, fell 17%.

O-P-P also investigated 21 drug-related incidents, two fewer than in 2024.

Police also issued more than 21-hundred charges over the past year.

That represents a 4% decrease from the previous year.

Forty-seven percent of the charges, or 990, were criminal code charges.

Another 33% were related to traffic offences.

On the roadways, 96 motorists were charged with speeding, representing a 21.5% increase from 2024.

Distracting driving charges were up 109% with 23 motorists nabbed, compared with eleven in 2024.

The number of impaired driving charges dropped 15% from 92 to 78.

There were also 144 collisions, a 14.8% decrease.

Only one resulted in the death of a person, with six others resulting in injuries.

Police also responded to 33 overdose incidents, which were 11 fewer than in 2025.

Nine people died, which is the most since 2023.
