Fire damages Festival Arena in Shediac

The Festival Arena in Shediac is temporarily closed.

There was a fire on Saturday night in two of the building’s dressing rooms.

In a news release, the Town says an initial investigation found the fire was likely caused by the heating system, which ignited hockey equipment stored in one of the dressing rooms.

A full assessment of the damage, along with cleaning operations, will be done in the coming days.

“Fortunately, no one was injured, and I want to thank our emergency teams for their quick actions,” said Roger Caissie, Mayor of Shediac. “We understand the importance of the arena to our community, and we are doing everything we can to ensure a safe reopening as soon as possible.”

An update from the Town will be released once the arena is ready to reopen to the public. They expect it to be closed for at least a couple of days.

The New Brunswick RCMP is asking for the public’s help to locate a 33-year-old woman who is believed to be in the Shediac or Moncton regions.

Ashley Dawn Johnston is wanted on an outstanding warrant of arrest in relation to failure to comply with court-ordered conditions.

Johnston is described as being approximately 5’5 and approximately 143 pounds. She has black hair and brown eyes.

If seen, the RCMP asks the public not to approach her. Instead, call 911 immediately.

Neil Alexander Lively is wanted on an outstanding warrant of arrest in relation to failure to comply with court-ordered conditions.

Lively is described as being approximately 5’9 and approximately 205 pounds. He has black hair styled as a mohawk and blue eyes.

If seen, the RCMP asks the public not to approach him. Instead, call 911 immediately.

School helps boost Shediac’s 2025 building permits

Last year was one of growth for the town of Shediac, with more than $111 million worth of building permits.

There was a big boost in the commercial and institutional sector, reaching $66 million, primarily due to the planned construction of a new English-language K to 12 school.

The school will be located near Highway 15 and Ohio Road, leading to the entrance of Parlee
Beach Provincial Park.

“This major project will have a significant economic impact on this part of the town,”Director of Economic Development and Tourism Danny Pellerin says.

The building permit for the new school alone, valued at $61,939,387, represents more than half of the total value of building permits issued in 2025.

The residential sector remained steady, with 152 permits valued at $18 million, and multi-family construction reached $27 million.

“Shediac is experiencing sustained growth while ensuring well-planned, responsible, and
balanced development for the benefit of the entire population,” said Shediac Mayor
Roger Caissie.

He has already stated he will not be seeking re-election this spring in the municipal elections.

“It will now be up to the next members of the municipal council to continue this momentum, while remaining true to the values that make Shediac one of the best places to live, work, and do business,” Caissie stated.
