Work continues on new transmission lines in northwestern Ontario

Progress is being made on the Waasigan Transmission Line project.

It is a double-circuit 230 kilovolt line from Shuniah to Atikokan.

Hydro One and nine First Nations are involved.

The power it provides is to help with economic development, including new mines that come into commission.

In an update on social media, they indicate that foundations at 328 sites are complete and ready for future installation of towers.

Two hundred and ninety-one structures have been assembled, while 37 kilometres of overhead power lines have been strung.

The line is expected to be operational by the end of this year.

A second phase of the construction is a single-circuit 230 kv line from Atikokan to Dryden.

That line is not expected to be ready for use until 2027.

Clearing of land is almost 75% complete.

Some of the sites are being done by hand to protect the cultural heritage of this area.
