Tips to keep from getting scammed this holiday season
With the holiday shopping season nearing its peak, the Better Business Bureau has reminded consumers to keep up smart shopping habits.
A release from the BBB said last-minute shopping can lead to rushed decisions, which can make consumers more vulnerable to scams, privacy risks and overspending.
Scammers often try to take advantage of the holiday rush because they know consumers are pressed for time.
“Last-minute shopping doesn’t have to mean risky shopping,” said BBB Atlantic CEO Julia Lewis. “A few smart precautions can help ensure a joyful and scam-free holiday season.”
Here are five of BBB’s top tips for last-minute holiday shopping.
- Be cautious of fake websites and social media ads. Fraudulent online stores often offer hard-to-find gifts at unbelievably low prices. Look for https:// in the URL (the s stands for “secure”). Never enter payment or personal information into a website with only “HTTP” – it is NOT secure.
- Don’t rush while checking out. Countdown timers and “limited stock” alerts can be used to pressure you into making rushed decisions. Ensure you are on the retailer’s legitimate website before entering any payment or personal info.
- Use secure payment methods. According to BBB’s research, consumers who paid with a credit card were less likely to lose money. Be extremely cautious when using any non-traditional payment methods.
- Professional photos do not mean it’s a real offer. Website photos can motivate users to engage with scammers, especially for clothing and accessories, pets and pet supplies, and vehicles. Don’t be persuaded by a flashy website or ad.
- Read the fine print. Check the return and exchange policies before making any purchases, especially with pop-up shops or seasonal retailers.
