Local sports for Monday, January 12th
The Fort Frances Lakers have leapfrogged the idle Dryden GM Ice Dogs and taken over first place in the Superior International Junior Hockey League Standings.
The Lakers won both of their games this weekend edging the Thunder Bay North Stars 4-3 Saturday night and downing the North Stars 5-2 on Friday night.
That gives Fort Frances 44 points in 29 games.
The Lakers are one point ahead of the Ice Dogs, but Dryden has two games in hand.
Elsewhere, the Sioux Lookout Bombers dumped the Red Lake Miners in a pair of weekend games, winning 7-3 on Saturday and 7-1 on Friday.
The Kam River Fighting Walleye hold down third place in the standings, but they have played 31 games this season.
Over the weekend they split their series with the Ironwood Lumberjacks losing 3-2 on Saturday but winning 4-1 Friday night.
The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s hockey team was back in action following a month-long holiday break.
The Thunderwolves got by the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-2 in overtime Friday night.
On Saturday, the Hawks got by the Lakehead 7-5.
The Thunderwolves are in Waterloo this Friday and Saturday with games against the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier.
