More long-term care homes could join Nova Scotia strike as support grows
Nova Scotia’s long-term care strike could expand again this week as more homes prepare to join the job action if a deal is not reached.
CUPE says workers at four additional facilities have now issued 48-hour strike notice. That means employees at Grand View Manor in Berwick, Magnolia Continuing Care Centre in Enfield, Shiretown and Ivey’s Terrace in Pictou County could begin striking Thursday morning, with Maple Hill Manor in New Waterford set to follow Friday.
If that happens, CUPE says the total would rise to 29 locals and nearly 3,000 workers on strike across the province.
The walkout is already affecting more than 20 long-term care homes, many of which continue operating with reduced staffing.
Nurses union offers support
Striking workers are also receiving support from other unions.
The Nova Scotia Nurses Union has announced a $10,000 donation to help long-term care workers on the picket line.
CUPE says members have also received support from other labour groups, including NSGEU and Canada Post workers, with union members joining picket lines in several communities.
No movement reported in talks
CUPE says there have been no major updates from bargaining since the strike began.
The union says it has been ready to return to the table, but claims government has not resumed negotiations.
Long-term care workers have said their main issues include wages, staffing levels and working conditions.
