Off‑duty RCMP officer rescues child from Dieppe fire
An off‑duty RCMP officer ran into a burning home in Dieppe to rescue a child, according to the Codiac Regional RCMP.
Police said the fire happened on June 3 at a home on Peupliers Street, where early reports suggested children might still be inside.
When officers and firefighters arrived, most people had already escaped, but the RCMP said Constable Xavier Mayer‑St‑Marie learned one child was still unaccounted for.
He went inside the burning home, searched through heavy smoke and found the child hiding in a hallway, according to police.
The RCMP said he carried the child outside and then checked the adjoining unit of the duplex after noticing a vehicle in the driveway and not knowing if anyone was still inside.
Police said he forced his way in and confirmed the unit was empty.
Emergency Medical Services assessed everyone at the scene, and no injuries were reported.
Mounties said Mayer-St-Marie’s actions kept the situation from turning tragic.
