Compensation available for patients at Indian Hospitals
Compensation is available for anyone that might have stayed at a federal Indian hospital.
Several sessions will be held in Kenora this week for anyone what wishes to apply for compensation.
Valerie Scharrer is with the Community Support Program and says there were three Indian hospitals operating in northern Ontario, including ones in Sioux Lookout and in Moosonee.
“The settlement covers when the hospitals were operated by the Government of Canada between 1936 and 1981,” explains Scharrer.
“So, if folks went to one of the 33 hospitals during that time frame, they may be eligible for compensation.”
Scharrer adds there is a wide range of compensation available.
“Anyone who experienced verbal, phycological, physical or sexual abuse during their time at the hospital and the compensation ranges from $10,000 to $200,000 depending on the abuse that the person experienced.”
The first session will take place this afternoon at 5:30 at the Clarion Lakeside Inn.
From Tuesday to Friday, there will be one-on-one help available for anyone who wants to apply for compensation.
