Halifax hosting free World Cup watch parties as tournament kicks off
World Cup fever is building in Halifax as the FIFA World Cup gets set to begin Thursday.
A free fan event called Canada Celebrates the FIFA World Cup 2026 will take place at the Garrison Grounds on Thursday and Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. each day.
The event will feature live match viewings on large screens, soccer-themed activities, cultural and music performances, family programming and local food vendors.
The tournament officially opens Thursday with Mexico taking on South Africa.
Canada will play its first match Friday against Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving fans a chance to gather for what is expected to be a major moment for Canadian soccer.
Local bars and restaurants are also preparing for increased business throughout the tournament, with many expected to host viewing parties or welcome larger crowds as fans look for places to watch the games.
All events at the Garrison Grounds are free and open to the public.
