Kenora council drafts resolution regarding school boards
The province has announced wide-spread changes that will affect the governance of local school boards.
That will affect the role of school board trustees.
Kenora mayor Andrew Poirier says he is glad the province has decided not to eliminate the need for trustees altogether.
“I was happy, because my career was with school boards, so I saw a lot of good things happen with elected officials and the fights they engaged in to protect things, specifically in the City of Kenora,” Poirer told council in introducing the resolution.
Councillor Lindsay Koch feels the province is making these changes because of actions of a few school boards and that isn’t right.
“I’m all for making sure we’re reviewing things to make sure we’re being good stewards of the finances, but this is such a blanket thing that is being dropped on boards across the province.”
City council has passed a resolution asking for a full-scale, transparent, and province-wide consultation on school board governance models.
The request for the resolution was made by trustees from the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.
