Mariners Centre wellness project on schedule, aquatic facility set to open in 2027
Work continues on a major expansion at the Mariners Centre in Yarmouth, with organizers saying the project remains on schedule and on budget.
The Credit Union Wellness Centre project includes a new aquatic facility and updated recreation space aimed at meeting current community needs.
Carrie Muse says construction is progressing steadily.
“We are on schedule and on budget right now… we’re looking at substantial completion around the beginning of November,” she said.
Muse says once construction wraps up, crews will need additional time to prepare the building for use, with the goal of opening to the public in January.
Inside the facility, much of the structural work is already in place, with walls up and final concrete work around the pool deck nearing completion. Mechanical, electrical and ventilation systems are also being installed.
A key feature of the project is the new aquatic centre, which Muse says addresses a long-standing gap in the community.
“We’ve gone years with a deficient pool… it’s time for a new pool,” she said.
She says the facility is designed to support swimming lessons and water safety, calling it a critical life skill in a coastal region.
The project is being built with long-term sustainability in mind, with planners focusing on what the community can afford to operate now, while leaving room for future expansion.
Muse says there’s already strong interest from the community, with plans for fundraising events, a time capsule and opportunities for local residents to get involved as construction continues.
The wellness centre is expected to become a central hub for recreation in the region once it opens.
