Maritime lobster in high demand bringing favorable spring prices for fishermen
The Maritime Fishermen’s Union (MFU) says spring lobster market conditions are strong, supported by high demand, a favorable exchange rate, and the end of tariff concerns.
The union also points to fishing areas where lobster is harvested, also known as lower landings, as a factor helping to keep prices firm over the past three years.
In addition, they say cold weather could slow the early catch, but overall prospects remain solid for Maritime harvesters. With operating costs now about double what they were before the pandemic, the union says shore prices of nine to ten dollars per pound are needed to keep fishing viable.
The MFU states that Maritime fishermen offer a premium-quality product, harvested responsibly and sustainably, and that value creation throughout the supply chain must begin with a fair price at the wharf.
