Pikangikum issues State of Emergency
The Pikangikum First Nation says its water treatment plant is operating beyond capacity and the community is worried that it’s water and wastewater systems are collapsing.
A State of Emergency has been declared…the second declaration in the past year.
The band says daily forced shutdowns and water rationing are being continued.
Right now the resevoir is in danger of going dry, with more water going out of the water treatment plant that coming in.
Also, the band says there are 300 homes that are not connected to the water treatment plant and don’t have direct water service.
The First Nation says the situation is not new, or unforseen, it’s due to a lack of action by the federal government.
