Fire at recycling facility closes section of Chain Lake Drive in Halifax

A fire at a recycling facility has closed a section of Chain Lake Drive on Monday.

The roadway is shut down between Otter Lake Court and Washmill Lake Drive.

District Chief Rob Hebb tells Acadia News the facility recycles paper and cardboard. Those materials are compressed with bales, which is what caught on fire.

“Each one of the bales weights about 1,000 lbs,” says Hebb.

He says it’s unclear how many were involved but employees caught the fire early and fire crews had it under control within 30 to 45 minutes.

“The big work involved is now tearing those bales of cardboard and paper apart and spreading them out and soaking them down,” explains Hebb.

He says this is to make sure they have all the fire and embers out.

“The good news is, nobody was hurt,” says Hebb. “Everybody was accounted for.”

Hebb was not sure how damaged the building is.

“I think the fire was more or less contained to the bales themselves. The building itself, I don’t think was impacted structurally.”

Police are asking you to avoid the area while crews investigate.
