Police warn Kenora residents as bears become more active

Police in the Kenora region are warning residents to stay alert as bears emerge from hibernation and become more active with warmer weather.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says there has been an increase in reports of bears entering yards and moving through neighbourhoods in recent weeks.

Officers say the rise in sightings is typical for this time of year, as bears search for food. However, they note that unsecured food sources can attract wildlife into residential areas.

Residents are being urged to reduce those risks by securing garbage bins, removing bird feeders, and keeping pet food and other attractants out of reach.

Police also remind the public to use caution during any encounter. If you see a bear, they say to stay calm, keep a safe distance, and to not approach the animal.
